MPLS, or Multi-Protocol Label Switching, is a network that labels, categorizes, and monitors the packets of data going through them. Conventional IP networks did not label these packets, so MPLS has been designed to do so. MPLS is made of several devices that help to label and direct the traffic passing by. A device known as a label edge router (LERs) are made to check IP packet that enter the network and attach MPLS headers. They are also designed to remove headers as the IP packets leave the network. Another device that is used is called a label switch router (LSR). This device finds the label on each packet and follows the instructions enclosed within. MPLS networks have several advantages. One of the most beneficial features is that it provides almost the same quality than that of a regular T1, without the dedicated line. Network managers can ensure that VoIP traffic will be on the best, most dependable parts of the network, while less crucial traffic is sent on the slower parts. MPLS networks are generally the most useful to large corporate companies. However, small and medium sized businesses are starting to benefit from the increasing functionality and low costs of MPLS networks. Any Questions? Contact us toll free at 877-4 EASY T1.
